Skagen´s history
Skagen is thought to have been founded in the 13th century. After crises in terms of fishing, flooding and sand migration in the 17th and 18th centuries, Skagen once again began to flourish during the course of the 19th century. At the same time, painters, poets and writers discovered Skagen, which at that time was regarded as the country's most fashionable holiday destination.

Art and history
Several of Denmark's best-loved artists have made their mark on Skagen and its development as a holiday destination. At the end of the 19th century there was a genuine artists' colony in Skagen. Skagen Harbour
The harbour, Skagen Harbour, has been the local point of many activities ever since it was opened in 1907. It is one of Denmark's most important fishing ports. A small fleet of local fishing boats supplies fresh fish to the fish auction every day. Thousands of pleasure boat sailors contribute to the creation of a wonderful and intense atmosphere at the harbour.

The magic of nature
Skagen boasts magnificent and dramatic scenery characterised by sea, sand, wind and wonderful light. This special light is created thanks to reflections from the sea around Skagen and from the many, kilometre-long white sandy beaches. Superb food
Skagen's many inviting menus are influenced by the riches of the sea. Skagen is one of the harbours in Denmark where the greatest quantity of fish for human consumption is landed. At the harbour there are several fish restaurants and small eateries with outdoor service, representing a choice which ranges from the simple to a major culinary experience.

Beaches and bathing

Skagen's 65 km of white sandy beaches with a hinterland of sand dunes are perfect for activities and bathing. The beach along Skagerrak to the west can have powerful waves and treacherous currents, whilst the beach at Kattegat to the east is milder and more suitable for children. There's a rich flora and fauna with many rare birds that attract ornithologists from far and wide.
