The Port of Hirtshals

The port area is an interesting place to be. There's activity 24-hours-a-day. Fish are landed and goods unloaded from both large and small ships. At the port you can see the ferry traffic when the big ferries depart to or arrive from Norway.

The Port of Hirtshals is an exciting and busy port. The port functions as a fishing, traffic and ferry port. Part of the port is closed to the public, but it's still possible to drive round and see a number of boats landing their fish.

At the port many different types of fish are landed, including sand eel, industrial fish, cod, herring and mackerel.

The port represents a link to Norway with the Super Speed ferries by Color Line to Kristiansand and Larvik. And to Stavanger - Bergen by Fjord Line. In summer, Fjord Line also travels to Kristiansand.

From the land to the sea

In Hirtshals, fishing can be done from the jetty in all types of weather. At the jetty you can share the passion of other tourists or locals, whilst enjoying a tasty packed lunch.

You can sail out before sunrise in one of the many angling vessels and start the day gazing at the sunrise and the gulls flying close to the cutter.

Fish caught include cod, pollack, saithe, ling or catfish. Fishing takes place at all the different fishing grounds, The Yellow Reef (det Gule Rev) and on various wrecks.

The feeling of community on the boats is a unique experience which is difficult to describe. There's a good community spirit. You share a common interest in the sea, and if you get lucky, dinner is perhaps on the other end of the line.

Trappemonumentet

Trappemonumentet, which makes up the stepped link from Den Grønne Plads to Vesthavnen, has a special design which results in a number of exciting experiences, at the same time as it performs the practical function of connecting "up" with "down".

To get around at the harbour

The Port of Hirtshals is secured against terrorist attack, which means that a part of the port is closed to the public. It's still possible, however, to drive round most of the port area.
