Making great finds on the beach

The beach is a treasure trove of exciting things that are washed ashore. You never know what you'll find because it depends on the season and the direction of the wind - and therefore it's always exciting to explore the beach.

A short walk on the beach at any time of the year provides lots of fresh air and the chance to look at stones, gather seashells, examine seaweed and small creatures in the sand.

Take a small bag or bucket to collect your "bounty" so that you can make your own small work of art or exhibition of what you've found when you get home and have washed and dried your finds on a newspaper.

Nordic Gold - a small find from the past

The golden lumps of resin dripped off the mighty pine trees that covered Scandinavia and the Baltic some 30-50 million years ago. Today these lumps of amber are washed up onto the beach along the Baltic Sea, Kattegat and the North Sea coasts. There are good chances of finding amber anywhere along the coast of the Land of Light.

Amber is a fascinating material – and has been highly prized as jewellery material for several thousand years. Amber jewellery is beautiful and warm. It's almost as if the amber has absorbed thousands of hours of sunshine – it has a golden glow and feels pleasant and warm to the touch.

Balsam for the soul from sunrise to sunset

Take a quiet moment and look out over the sea. There's nothing quite as relaxing as letting your eye rest by looking towards the horizon and nothing quite as soothing as listening to the sound of waves crashing onto the beach.

Yet another free pleasure and fantastic experience is seeing the sun rise in the east and set over the North Sea in the west.

At the region's amber polishers

you can see for yourself how the amber is worked. Or go to one of the events about amber and learn how to find it.

Did you know

that you can still be lucky enough to see the fisherman pulling up their fishing vessels onto the beach at Løkken and Lønstrup - just like they used to do in days gone by.

If you want to learn more...

...about the treasures of the sea, then make sure you visit the North Sea Oceanarium in Hirtshals.

...about amber, then visit the amber polishers in the region or participate in an event to hear more about this "Nordic Gold".

The best place

to find amber is in the line of seaweed and other debris that's washed up onto the beach - especially following a windy period and in particular during the winter months. Look for the so-called amber-sticks – the small, black, saturated pieces of wood.
