Conservation Zones and Conservation Periods

Conservation zones:
Where streams, brooks and “inland waters”, etc., flow out into the sea, there are statutory rules on conservation belts that are in force throughout the year. Fishing may not take place within 500 metres of the mouth of the stream.
If the mouth of the stream is less than 2 metres wide, the rules for conservation belts only apply from 16 September to 15 January.
Please be aware that there may be special rules and regulations concerning conservation belts for particular watercourses. This is the case for example at the mouths of Voer Å and Elling Å where they flow out into Kattegat.

In addition, it's forbidden to fish in watercourses within a distance of 50 metres of inlets or outlets from artificially constructed fish passages – e.g. fish steps – or within the passage itself.

In saltwater, the conservation of salmon and trout only applies to coloured fish, i.e. fish displaying their spawning colours.

During the conservation period only completely shiny, loose-scaled fish may be kept. Coloured fish must be put back immediately. Many species of fish may only be caught if they have reached a certain size. A list of the most important minimum size limits and conservation periods can be seen below.
